Idaho possesses a growing biotechnology and life sciences industry. The Gem State currently draws upon its existing research infrastructure to aid in its growth as a future biotech hub.
The Idaho National Laboratory boasts over 75 scientists and engineers, and conducts research to advance environmental biotechnology.
The University of Idaho in Moscow provides a springboard for biotechnology and life sciences research. Its resources include the University Research Office, which helps to foster collaboration between academia and industry. The Idaho Research Foundation (IRF) in Post Falls provides the space and opportunity for businesses to conduct research. Over $80 million dollars in funding research was awarded to the University of Idaho in FY 2006.
The Idaho Bioscience Association (bioIdaho), an affiliate of the Biotech Industry Organization, is a not-for-profit institution which aims for collaboration between academia, industry, and political leaders in order to foster biotechnology and life science industries within the state.
Biotechnology and life sciences companies within Idaho include KRONUS, Inc. of Boise; Rangen, Inc. of Buhl; and Alturas Analytics, Inc. of Moscow, among others.
Idaho remains committed to ensuring its future in the arena of biotechnology and life sciences. The state’s heritage of agriculture and technology industries can provide the springboard for the Gem State to become a hub for its future growth in these areas.
