Idaho possesses a diverse terrain and a rich cultural heritage. These combine to create tremendous resources for recreation and entertainment in the Gem State.
While the rapidly growing city of Boise sits among an outdoor wonderland, many urban pursuits can also be experienced. Performing arts aficionados will enjoy Boise’s thriving arts scene. Boise Philharmonic is Idaho’s largest and oldest performing arts organization. The 70 professional orchestra members perform in several venues throughout the state, including the Morrison Center for the Performing Arts. Ballet Idaho provides fine dance productions. Art lovers will appreciate the Boise Art Museum, whereas history buffs will enjoy the Idaho Historical Museum, Basque Museum and Cultural Center (Boise is home to the largest Basque community in the United States), and Idaho Black History Museum. Boise consistently gains recognition for its high quality of life. Families and fans of animals and science will enjoy ZooBoise and the Discovery Center of Idaho.
Idaho boasts magnificent natural wonders, which provide endless outdoor pursuits. Rivers and lakes provide ample fishing; licensing information for both fishing and hunting can be obtained from Idaho Fish and Game. Water sports enthusiasts can canoe, kayak, or even sail in larger lakes, particularly the magnificent Lake Coeur d’Alene.
Unique natural areas exist within Idaho. Among those protected by the National Park Service are Craters of the Moon National Monument, with its massive swaths of ancient lava flows; Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail; Nez Perce National Historical Trail; and a portion of Yellowstone National Park, among many other sites. Falcons, eagles, and many other birds are protected in the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area.
The Gem State provides high quality skiing. Famous resorts include historic Sun Valley Resort, Schweitzer Mountain Resort, and Silver Mountain Resort.
Sports fans can enjoy Idaho’s professional teams, such as Idaho Steelheads hockey, as well as Minor League Baseball teams such as the Boise Hawks and the Idaho Falls Chukars.
Idaho’s diverse environment of cities and wilderness provides something for everyone.
